WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear Colleague,
The International Cloud Modeling Workshop to
be held in Hamburg, Germany, 12-16 July, 2004.
The meeting will be hosted by the Max Planck Institute for
Meteorology (MPI-M) in Hamburg, Germany. We plan to divide the workshop
into plenary sessions and working group meetings. One day of
the workshop will be devoted to the mini-workshop on convection parameterization.
A social event (sight-seeing in Hamburg and joint dinner on Wednesday evening) is also planned during the workshop.
Plenary sessions will include brief overview of the cases
(at the
beginning of the workshop), summary from working groups (at the
end of the workshop), and contributed papers (15-30
minutes depending on the number of papers submitted)
related to the general area of cloud physics and
cloud modeling. We invite all workshop participants to consider
presenting results of their research in this form. If some of participants
would prefer to present posters, please let us know as soon as
possible so we can plan accordingly. We may also decide to designate some
of the contributed papers into posters if the number of papers
is
in excess of time available.
Working Groups: As in previous workshops, working
groups will be organized around the cases considered
and they will meet in parallel. We expect that most of
the workshop participants select a case closest to their scientific interests,
perform model simulations as instructed, submit model results to
the case leader, and contribute to the working group meetings
during the workshop. PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO
THE
WORKSHOP WITHOUT PHYSICALLY ATTENDING IT.
A One day of the workshop will be devoted to
the mini-workshop on convection parameterization.
As many of you are aware, parameterization of
convective processes, and especially how to deal with microphysical processes
when convection is parameterized, is an important issue highly relevant
to NWP, climate, and climate change research. Indirect impact of anthropogenic aerosols is likely the best example as far as
the
climate change is concerned. More details about the mini-workshop
will be available at later time.
Special Issue of Atmospheric Research: As in
previous workshops, we are planing to publish a special issue of
Atmospheric Research which will include papers related to the
cases considered at the workshop as well as extended
versions of contributed papers. Atmospheric Research
works WITHOUT page charges and has a good citation
index. We encourage participants as well working group leaders to
submit papers to the special issue. Details about the special
issue will be available at the workshop. Deadline
for submissions will be in the late 2004 to early 2005 range.
Workshop Cases: Cases to be considered during the workshop can
be found at the "Workshop Cases" link.
We look forward to the productive meeting and hope to see all
of you in Hamburg in summer 2004.
