2005 RCM Workshop Announcement

Sponsored by the National Center for Atmospheric Research and organized by NCAR and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories

An invitation-only workshop on “Research Needs and Directions of Regional Climate Modeling Using WRF and CCSM” will be held at NCAR’s Foothills Laboratory, Main Auditorium, Building 2, 3450 Mitchell Lane, Boulder, CO, March 22-23, 2005.

Since October 2003, the NCAR Opportunity Fund has supported an effort to develop regional climate modeling capability using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The goal is to develop a next generation community regional climate model for addressing upscaling and downscaling issues in climate modeling. To date, some significant progress has been made and a formal WRF Working Group on Regional Climate Modeling has recently been established to coordinate community involvement in model development for climate applications.

The purpose of the workshop is to engage the regional climate and global climate modeling communities in defining the next steps. Specifically, the objectives of the workshop are:

  • To define research needs for the development of a next generation community regional climate model based on WRF and CCSM
  • To define upscaling and downscaling research that can be addressed by regional climate models
  • To solicit ideas and interest to develop an NCAR regional climate modeling initiative

Participation to this workshop is by invitation only. Please see the tentative agenda for the two-day workshop.
