First figure: Hovmoller-type depiction of composited rainfall (mm/hr) over a 24-hour cycle for days with ordinary values of Froude number. Horizontal axis is distance offshore from the windward coast of Hawaii and vertical axis shows time increasing downward. Rainfall rate is estimated from radar reflectivity using a standard Z-R relationship and is averaged over 5 km wide by 40 km long slabs oriented parallel to the Hawaiian coast. Positions of the flow separation line as determined by mesonet, radar and aircraft measurements are indicated by the "O"s. Click on the size of the file below to view it.
